Gary Merrell Obituary

Gary Merrell, 67, passed away on Sept. 8, 2014, in his home in the mountains of Cloudcroft. He was born on Nov. 11, 1946, in Lubbock, Texas, to Joseph and Ozelle Merrell.

He married Paula Killman March 29, 1970, in Lubbock, Texas. He was an engineer for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 31 years. He shared his knowledge and experience by teaching high school at Odessa High School for 12 more years before retiring again and moving to Cloudcroft in 2009. He quickly joined the James Canyon Fire Department and has served with them for five years. He loved all children, especially his grandkids. He was a child himself at heart. He always loved a good joke and absolutely loved to laugh. He always had a project to work on, but anyone that was around him for any length of time knew that he would not hesitate to help with anyone else's needs or projects before getting to his own.

Survivors include his wife, Paula Merrell of Cloudcroft; three sons, Stephen M. Merrell of Odessa, Texas; Michael P. Merrell and wife Meredith of Dallas, Texas; and Joseph D. Merrell of Odessa, Texas; three grandchildren, Bryson Cagle of Abilene, Texas; and Kaelyn Merrell and Ethan Merrell, both of Odessa, Texas; his mother, Ozelle Merrell of Cloudcroft; and brother Larry M. Merrell of Dallas, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Henry Merrell.

The family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
The Memorial Service will be conducted at Cloudcroft United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, with Pastor Eileen Utton, officiating.
Should friends desire, contributions may be made to United Methodist Men of Cloudcroft First United Methodist Church.

The Merrell family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
