George Robert Wood Obituary
George Robert Wood
1926 - 2011
It is with heavy heart that we are sharing the passing of my beloved father, George Robert Wood. George Wood passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2011, in Las Cruces.
George Wood was born in Milton Township, Mich., on July 15, 1926, to George Allen and Hazel Wood. George grew up and graduated from Niles High School, Mich., where upon graduation he enlisted into the U.S. Army for the World War II European theater.
George was a caring family man and a man of many funny stories. George loved westerns and funny jokes; we have heard many from him. George is a U.S. Army 20-year veteran of two foreign wars, decorated with two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, European Theater and Korean War medals. George gave his long, dedicated service and sacrifice to our nation so we all can and will continue to have freedom!
After retiring in Indianapolis from the U.S. Army, George moved his family to Alamogordo in 1965 to work for computing and software at Holloman Air Force Base. George later started a trucking company, leasing equipment to C&H Transportation, of Dallas, for 10 years. Later, George worked for the Alamogordo Super 8 Motel, where after many years he retired to enjoy life.
George is a past master mason of Sacramento Lodge 1990 and was very active in his Alamogordo Sacramento Masonic Lodge. George and his wife of 54 years, Herta "Candy" Wood, lived in Alamogordo since 1965. George and Herta Wood moved from Alamogordo in September 2010 to live in an assisted living community in Las Cruces.
George leaves behind his wife, Herta "Candy" Wood, and his son Mark, Mark's wife, Kathy, and daughter Whitney, of Phoenix.
Due to the nature of Herta suffering from severe dementia, no services have been planned for the public.
We will miss him greatly, his smile and gentleness ... Rest in peace as you move through your internal journey ...
And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." - Luke 23:43
