George W. Bowers Obituary
George W. Bowers, a resident of Alamogordo for 35 years, died peacefully at his home Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009. He joined his beloved wife, Audre, in the presence of their Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.
George was born in a log cabin in Kentucky and grew up in Kentucky and St. Louis, Mo. He served in the Army during World War II.
Shortly after the war ended, he enlisted in the Air Force. He distinguished himself as a supply sergeant, served two assignments on the 12th Headquarters Inspector General's Team in Texas, and retired as a master sergeant in 1970 in Austin, Texas.
He enjoyed his second career in the moving and storage business, especially since he could continue to support the military. Following his second retirement, George co-founded the local Teen Court and served in various positions for 16 years. He was active in his church and community and was very proud to be a resident of Alamogordo and New Mexico. The family expresses their sincere appreciation to all who blessed his life throughout the years.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Audre; his parents; and a sister, Marzee Whiteside, of Paducah, Ky.
Survivors include his daughter Mellanie and her husband, Dr. Philip Fike, of Roy, Utah; his granddaughter Heather and her husband, Col. (Select) Lloyd Blackmon, of Arlington, Va.; his great-grandson, L.J.; his brother, John L. Jackson, presently living in China; and nieces, nephews and cousins in Kentucky and California.
George's memorial service will be at First Baptist Church, 1100 Michigan Ave., Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at 11 a.m. He will be buried beside Audre at South Park Cemetery in Roswell.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church or Gideons International.
The Bowers family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
