Gerard John Filips passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, just two weeks shy of his 75th birthday. He was a loving husband, parent by choice, friend to many and enemy to none. He was born Jan. 16, 1935, in Crofton, Neb., to Otto and Hilda (Lammers) Filips, one of nine children. He graduated from high school in 1952 in Hartington, Neb. He continued his education at Creighton University and earned his engineering degree at Marquette University.
He joined the Army and served three years during the Korean era. After the Army, he began his career with Martin Marietta Company in Denver. There he also met Grace (Dottie) Blaisdell and they began their life together. He then worked for General Electric in Bay St. Louis, Miss., on the Saturn V-Man to the Moon project. In 1968, he was hired by Boeing in Alamogordo, and later transferred to the Seattle location in the winter of 1971 during the big layoff. He worked for Boeing for 27 years on various top secret military projects, retiring in 1995. After retirement they returned to Alamogordo to enjoy the sunshine, clear skies and good friends.
He has always been active in the church, singing in the choir at St. Francis of Assisi in Seattle, volunteering for various activities and continuing, after retirement, at St. Jude Mission as lector, member of the choir and member of Knights of Columbus Council 3355 (fourth degree), where he held several officer positions. He worked at the fair booth for several years and helped at all of the pancake breakfasts. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge and a past member of the Elks Lodge
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Grace (Dottie); his children Caroline (James) Shultz, Brooks Cohoe, Charles Cohoe and Katherine (Cliff) Crowder; his grandchildren Jennifer, JaimeAnn, John, Diana, David and Eric; his brothers and sisters Charlene (Fred) Neely, Adele (Ray) Promes, Janet (Killian) Beck, Rosanne (Rodney) Kinkaid, Vernon (Tee), Richard (Pru), and Clifford; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many close friends.
He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Yvonne Garcia and best friend Jack Joyner.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus Council 3355 Ladies Auxiliary Scholarship Fund for graduating Catholic seniors.
