1940 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Gertrud Angelika (Thelen) Kimber Obituary
Gerti passed away peacefully at her home in Alamogordo, New Mexico with her family at her side. She was born in 1940 in Trier, Germany where she grew up with her loving parents and six brothers. During World War II, she and her family were refugees, fleeing first to east Germany, then back to the west to escape the fighting. After finishing school, Gerti worked as a model and as a beautician on Bitburg and Spangdahlem Air Bases. She met the love of her life, Airman Ed Kimber, in Euren, Germany in 1964. They were married at St. Helena Catholic Church on July 3, 1965 in Euren. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2015 with a family trip back to Germany. All her children and grandchildren were able to see where she grew up, attended school, and visit with family and friends in her home town. All attended Mass at St. Helena on their anniversary.

Once Ed and Gerti were married, she gave up her career to become a "domestic engineer"- her term for a loving mother and homemaker. She worked hard to provide a wonderful home for her family through their many moves and travels around the world. Her favorite pastimes were playfully cheating at cards, going to the gym with her best friend, and knitting blankets for her entire family (even for great grandchildren yet to be born). Gerti will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, Omi and friend who delighted in sharing great food, good music and a well-made drink.

Gerti is survived by her adoring husband of 52 years, Ed; children Claudia Comerford and husband Chris of Saint Louis, MO, Angelica Kimber of San Antonio, TX, Alex Kimber of Spangdahlem, Germany; grandchildren Ian, Collin, and Anna Comerford, and Morgan and Autumn Kimber. She is also survived by brothers Karl and Juergen Thelen of Germany. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Anna and Peter Thelen, and brothers Germond, Toni, Willi, and Peter Thelen.

A funeral mass will be held at St Jude's Catholic Church at 10:00 A.M. on 5 February 2018. Gerti's favorite flowers were yellow roses, however, in lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Father James B. Hay Catholic School (link will be provided in the online obituary).

The Kimber family has entrusted the care of their loved one to Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
