Gilbert Gutierrez Obituary

Gilbert, 84, was born in Alamogordo, N.M., on Oct. 13, 1931, to Juan Jose and Aurelia Gutierrez, both of N.M. He was the youngest of 7 brothers. He grew up with his other six brothers in Alamogordo, and later in Los Angeles, El Paso, and La Luz as his father was employed with the Southern Pacific Railroad. Gilbert served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and came back to complete his high school education. Gilbert was blessed with the opportunity to complete his high school education through the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board at the Valley Baptist Academy in Brownsville, Texas. This is where he met his soulmate, Henrietta Davila, who was also completing her education there. They were married on Oct. 13, 1956, in Gilbert's hometown of Alamogordo, N.M. The couple lived in the states of Calif., Texas and N.M., throughout years of their marriage.

Gilbert operated the family farm business together with his father in La Luz when first married. Then the couple moved to Whittier, Calif., where they both worked in fish canneries. He later worked as Landscaping Foreman at the Valley Baptist Academy in Harlingen, Texas and finally as a Custodian for Alamogordo Public Schools where he retired.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years Henrietta Gutierrez who passed away recently on Jan. 13, 2016, and his parents, Juan Jose & Aurelia Gutierrez; six brothers, Albert, Ernest, Steve, Richard, Fidel, and Rudy; several dear sisters and brothers-in-law on both sides of the family; and his infant son David Gutierrez.

He leaves behind his daughter, Magdalena Gutierrez-Davis; and his son, Daniel D. Gutierrez. In addition, he is survived by sisters-in-law Maruja Gutierrez, Elisa Gutierrez, and Josie Gutierrez; sons-in-law Raymond Davis and Godofredo Rodriguez; step grandchildren, Justin Davis and Katy Davis, and many nieces and nephews. Gilbert was loved by many, and will be deeply missed.

Gilbert resided in his beloved La Luz the majority of his life as he referred to as "God's Country." Gilbert will be remembered for his gentle spirit, kind hearted demeanor, his witty sense of humor, creative play on words, love of family and nature, and his private spirituality. Gilbert had a passion for automobiles and could name the year, make, and model of almost any car. In addition, Gilbert had strong artistic abilities and enjoyed sketching.

The viewing and visitation will be on Friday, April 1, 2016, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Alamogordo Funeral Home. The funeral service will be on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 1 p.m., directed by Pastor Naya Benitez at Alamogordo Funeral Home located at 2301 First Street (575) 434-5253.
Interment will be at Monte Vista Cemetery, at 1590 First Street. A memorial reception and fellowship potluck will follow at La Luz Recreation Center (Old School Gym).

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at the UNM Cancer Center and Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center for their compassionate care of Gilbert.
