Gisela Thea Gary Coleman

1929 - 2010 Obituary Condolences
On Thursday, April 29, 2010, Gisela Thea Gary Coleman was called by her heavenly Father. Gisela was born July 29, 1929, in pre-World War II Germany, in the state of Silesia. She was the youngest daughter of Theodore and Martha (Schwalm) Hildebrant and sister to Ruth and Wilhelm Isermann. Gisela was first and foremost a beloved wife, mother and educator. She came to the United States as a German war bride and was extremely proud of her hard earned American citizenship.
Gisela, also known to many as Gissy, was a unique and multi-talented lady who lived life to its fullest. She was a graduate of Kent State and Calrion universities, holding master's degrees in science and German literature. She was a school teacher from 1960 to 1980 and was beloved by a multitude of students. She was a lifelong athlete who loved to swim and ski. Gissy was a civic activist who readily donated her time. She was a wonderful musician, a licensed private pilot, a multi-talented artist, a woodworker, a rock hound and jewelry maker. She enjoyed caring for her dogs and turtles, as well as gardening and landscaping her yard. She served as president of the Somerset PA Aero Club and helped in rebuilding four of its aircraft. Gissy was treasurer of the Somerset Artist Association. After retiring from teaching, Gisela was an active member of local Elks Lodge 1897, served on the Alamogordo Airport Commission and was secretary of the Animal Rescue Mission as well as one of its most active thrift store volunteers. She played the organ at Our Savior Lutheran and St. John's Episcopal churches, was a member of the Eastern Star, taught lapidary classes at the local senior citizen center and ran for a city council position.
Gissy was preceded in death by her father, mother, sister, brother-in-law and first husband of 31 years, Henry Everett Gary. She leaves behind her adoring, loving husband, Robert Coleman, of Alamogordo, with whom she spent 29 wonderful years; and cherished and beloved children Gregory Gary, of Sandy, Utah, Mark Gary, of Taylorsville, Utah, Debbie Gary-Taskey, of Friedens, Penn., and "adopted" son Kirk Luce and family, of Franconia, N.H. She also leaves behind her wonderful stepchildren Neil Coleman, of Mercersburg, Penn.; Rob Coleman, of Somerset, Penn.; and Lauren Coleman Bertolini, of Waynesville, Ohio, and their families. Gisela had a granddaughter, Jessica Gary, and great-grandchildren Kiara and Christopher, living in Puerto Rico. She is also survived by Nephew Wolfgang Isermann, his wife, Rita, and their two sons Mario and Daniel of Lindlar, Germany.
We will always remember Gisela with much love and respect.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Animal Rescue Mission of Alamogordo, located at 19 Acoma Ave. There will be no public services held.
