Goldie M. Cherry Obituary
Goldie M. Cherry, 94, of Alamogordo, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, in Alamogordo.
Goldie was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Bromide, Okla., the fifth of 13 children born to Lud Low and Bertha (Sissom) Barris. She lived in Clovis for several years, where she worked at various jobs while raising her children and met and married Ross Cherry. She and Ross lived in Silver City for many years and, after his death in 2004, Goldie moved to Alamogordo to live with her daughter, Charlotte Darnold.
Goldie was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Aaron, Paul and Ned Barris; four sisters, Lottie Jones, Daisy Lee Barris, Iva Stanphill and Ozie Cantrell; her husband of 51 years, Ross Cherry; her son, Wayne Stephens; a daughter, Darlene Gray; and her granddaughter, Sandra Roberson.
Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Roberson, of Oklahoma City, and Charlotte Darnold and her husband, Richard, of Alamogordo; two sons, Albert Stephens and his wife, Sharon, of Carlsbad, and Darrell Stephens and his wife, Carol, of Mexico, Maine; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Edith McKaskle, of Oklahoma, Addie Truett, of Texas, Mary Lou Griswold, of Wyoming, and Syble White and her husband, D.A., of Silver City; a brother, Herbert Barris and his wife, Bonnie, of Pahrump, Nev.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Barris, of Silver City; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the Bright Funeral Home Chapel in Silver City, with Michael Gray officiating.
Committal services will follow at 1 p.m. at Ft. Bayard National Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with her late husband.
Friends may call Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, from 9 a.m. until service time at Bright Funeral Home.
