1936 - 2015 Obituary Condolences

(Husband, Father, Grandfather, Electronic technician)

Gregorio G. Telles, 78, passed away on Jan. 9, 2015, in Alamogordo.
He was born on Sept. 9, 1936, in Alamogordo to Gregorio and Florencia (Gonzales) Telles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jennie Villarreal and his wife Benina Montoya Telles.

Survivors include his wife Barbara Vaughn Telles; his two sons, Daniel and his wife Iran, Greg Michael and his wife Elizabeth, his two daughters Veronica and her husband Barry Nolan and Stephanie Telles. He leaves behind beloved grandsons Jason and Josiah Telles and cherished granddaughters Tayler and Alyssa Telles-Nolan. Gregorio is also survived by five brothers, Ray, Jerry, Sam, Ricky and Ernest, and one sister Adelaida Telles, along with many nephews, niece and cousins.

After graduating from Alamogordo High School in 1955, Gregorio, also known as "Junior," attended Los Angeles Junior College and worked as a carpenter's apprentice under his brother Ray who was a journeyman in California.
In 1957, Gregorio was employed by Land Air at Holloman Air Force Base as a supply clerk. In 1959 he was drafted and served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 178th Signal Corps during the pre-Vietnam era supporting the 82nd Airborne in Guam and the Philippines. He served two tours of duty, from June 1959 - May 1961. He was honorably discharged from Ft. Sam Houston in Texas.
He was later recalled from October 1961 - August 1962 with the Company B 769th Signal Corp during the Cuban Crisis. He earned a Sharpshooter badge with the rifle.

After his honorable discharge from Ft. Polk, La., in 1962, Gregorio returned to Alamogordo to work at Holloman Air Force Base in Telemetry with Land Air. He retired in 1999 from Newtec as an electronic technician with 42 years credit.
Before his retirement, he always had an interest in business and investment. This interest started in high school when he worked as a bagger with Food Mart and Piggley Wiggley on New York Avenue and continued after high school when he was employed as a bookkeeper for Snow Homes.

Gregorio owned the Cut and Curl Beauty Salon (now a restaurant) in Tularosa for 12 years; he was an original lot owner at Pine View Home Sites; an original stockholder for Las Cruces Funeral Home (now owned by Baca); an original investor in Otero Savings and Loan (the site of the First Savings Bank) and owned real estate in Mayhill, Tularosa and Alamogordo.

After retirement, he continued to enjoy hunting, fishing, golfing and gardening. He was proud of his bowling award when he bowled 11 strikes in a row. He developed a love of bowling from the time spent in his youth as a pinsetter at the old bowling lanes behind the Red Rooster (now a thrift shop). Gregorio's parents instilled a strong work ethic in him that he hopes will carry on to future generations.

Gregorio was also past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He has served as a member of the St. Jude Adoration team; as a member of the Pine View Community Association where he had a retirement cabin. He is a member of the American Legion and volunteered at the Alamogordo Senior Center.
