Guadalupe Romero "Lupe" Salcido Obituary
Community will miss her
Guadalupe "Lupe" Romero Salcido, 67, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2009, in Alamogordo. She was born on Dec. 12, 1941, in Carrizozo to Victor and Florinda (Chavez) Romero.
Lupe met and later married Faustino Salcido in 1961. They had three children, Debbie, Christopher and Ruben. He preceded her in death in 2002 after 41 years together. He was her biggest fan.
In 1954, when Lupe was 11 years old, she moved to Alamogordo with her family and has been here ever since. Lupe followed in her father's footsteps, loving sports. She attended Alamogordo High School where she played volleyball and basketball. She would have loved to play softball, too, but the high school didn't offer it. She also loved to cook and bake.
Lupe worked for civil service with the 6585th Test Group at Holloman Air Force Base for 28 years. She joined the test group softball team and in 1970 started coaching. She coached up to two teams a year since then. Lupe was also involved with the USSSA for 20 years and was inducted into the USSSA state hall of fame. She was the state youth director in charge of the youth for the whole state. Since 1959 she coached and played women's softball. In her spare time she enjoyed bowling and won many prizes. Her spare room is full of trophies belonging to various family members.
She also was very involved with her husband in the Knights of Columbus. She was the treasurer for the Knights Ladies Auxiliary for many years.
Lupe was a member of the Space City Evening Sertoma Club, the Eaglettes and a lifetime member of the VFW because her brother was a Vietnam veteran.
She is survived by sons Christopher Salcido and Ruben Salcido and wife, Julie; daughter Debra Salcido; six grandchildren, David, Kellea, Celeste, Dominic, Chayton and Israel Salcido; sisters Carol Sandoval and husband, Jose, and Grace Guidry and husband, Larry; aunts Stella Vullo, Virginia Farmer and Angelina Chavez; her special friend Margarite; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Vick and Florinda Romero, and a brother, Max Romero.
A rosary will be recited by Linda Villabisencio at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10 a.m. with Father Bryant Hausfeld, O.F.M., as celebrant.
Pallbearers include Jerry Hernandez, Alex Preciado, Paul Salcido, Clovis Salcido, Max Romero and Felipe Salcido Jr.
Interment will take place at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.
There will be a reception following the service at the Space City Sertoma Club bingo hall, directly across from the cemetery.
The Salcido family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
