Gustavo O. Najera Obituary

Gustavo O. Najera was born on April 4, 1932, to Jose Maria Najera and Esther Martinez Najera in Alamogordo. He went to meet his Lord on Aug. 30, 2014, surrounded by his family.

He was born during the Depression when jobs were few and money was scarce. He attended first and second grades at Dudley School. He was a member of the 1951 Alamo Tigers high school football team that won a New Mexico state championship. He graduated from Alamo High in 1952 and remained a loyal Tiger fan all of his life.

His legacy includes working at LandAir machine shop and photo lab from 1952-1961. He was City Commissioner from 1959 to 1963. The Alamogordo Airport and Library were built during his tenure. He served on the Alamogordo Public Housing Board from 1966 to 1982 and owned the Hennesse's Bar and Lounge.
He was also an organizer and founding board member of Western Bank from 1977 to the present. He was a life-time member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and served on the Parish Council board as treasurer at one time.
He was an avid big-game hunter, horseman, family man and was in the race-horse business for 30 years. He enjoyed going to the races at Ruidoso Downs, the church fiestas and listening to the music. His favorite hobbies were his kids and photography.

He is survived by his daughter Kathy Gonzales (Bob), sons Paul (Teresa), Jacob, and Daniel (Sara) Najera. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Esther Najera; sisters Angie Najera, Esther N. Viscarra, Carmen N. Romo, and brothers Jose (Chema) Najera, Luis Najera and Alfredo Najera.

A special mention goes to his close and life-long friend Zeke Castro, caregiver Jack E. Landers and friends Kevin Williams, Jose Ramos and Henry Cota. There are so any more that we cannot list them all.

Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.

The family asks in honor of Gus to please consider wearing western clothes to his services.
