Helen Frances Gephardt Richardson, of Hatch, was born Oct. 13, 1917, in Wagner, S.D., and went to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at the age of 94. Helen was the second child of four children and was preceded in death by her two sisters, Mildred Huff and Wilma Stacy; her parents George Gephardt and Fay Lawyer Gephardt; her son-in-law Joseph P. Casarez Sr., of El Paso; and her husband of more than 75 years, Jack Douglas Richardson. She is survived by her brother Forrest Gephardt, of Arkansas City, Kan., and four daughters, Jacqueline Casarez, of El Paso; Claudette Ortiz, of Hatch; Julia and husband, Lawrence Makinson, of Alamogordo; and Deborah and husband, Vollie Thompson, of Chula Vista, Calif.
Helen and Jack have nine grandchildren: Steven Sandoval; Department of Public Safety Lt. Richard Henley and wife, Kelly; retired Master Sgt. David Henley and wife, Karen; Linda Makinson and husband, Trevor Snell, all of Alamogordo; Michael Casarez and wife, Norma; William Ortiz and wife, Kris, of Albuquerque; Carla Hoppe and husband, Chris, of Mill Creek, Wash.; Elizabeth Casarez, PhD., and husband, Lee Baumgardner, of El Paso; and Daniel Sandoval, of Casper, Wyo.
Helen and Jack have 17 great-grandchildren: Andrea Anderson, John Sandoval, Thomas Sandoval, Aaron Henley, Jordan Henley, Daniel Henley and James Henley, all of Alamogordo; Aurora Beans, of Bellmont, Wis.; Katrina Sandoval, of Cut Bank, Mont.; Marshall Henley, of Clyde, Ohio; Ava Baumgardner, of El Paso; Alissa Sandoval and Evan Sandoval, of Casper; Katherine Ortiz, Paul Ortiz and Adam Casarez, all of Albuquerque; Parker Hoppe, of Mill Creek, Wash.; and one great-great-grandchild, Zoey Anderson, of La Luz.
Both Helen and Jack worked on airplanes in Wichita for Boeing Aircraft Company before Jack was transferred to Alamogordo in 1954. In Alamogordo, Helen worked at Medical Arts Pharmacy and with Sears & Roebuck and enjoyed being part of the Boeing Wives Club. In Hatch, Helen took part in the Red Hat Society, the Hatch Book Club, Garden Club and Extension Club. Helen and Jack belonged to several square dance clubs and enjoyed dancing their way around the Southwest. Most of all, Helen and Jack loved cat fishing near the rock house at Elephant Butte Lake.
Helen's family is having a private memorial on Thanksgiving and will host a celebration of life for Helen and Jack at Elephant Butte in June. Arrangements are by Kirikos Family Funeral Home Inc. and Sierra Crematory LLC. For online condolences, please go to www.kirikosfamilyfuneralhome.com.
