Helen Irene Rethmel, 92
Helen Irene Rethmel, 92, of Alamogordo, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, in Las Cruces. Helen was born Jan. 23, 1918, in Wood County, Ohio, to Helena and John Vermilya.
Helen graduated high school in Bowling Green, Ohio, and Toledo Nursing School in 1939. She married Robert Rethmel and the two settled in Dayton, Ohio. They moved to Alamogordo in 1956, where she was a school nurse and very active in the Girl Scouts and First Presbyterian Church.
For the past three years, Helen was a resident of the Village at Northrise in Las Cruces. She led a full life and was an inspiration to everyone she met. She was admired for her personality and her deep commitment to friends, family and community service.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Robert C. Rethmel; and brothers Bob Vermilya and Tom Vermilya.
Survivors include brother Jack Vermilya, of Greenville, Ohio; sister Ruth Budd, of Oregon; son Jim Rethmel and his wife, Carol, of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter Patty Dunlap and her husband, Jerry, of Las Cruces; five grandchildren, Jeff Rethmel and his wife, Dana, of Newman, Ga., Brian Dunlap and his wife, Shanna, of Hobbs, Amber Jimenez and her husband, Marcus, of Amarillo, Texas, Steve Dunlap, of Silver City, and Jerome Rethmel, of Albuquerque; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at 2 p.m. at The First Presbyterian Church of Alamogordo. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Alamogordo at 14th and Oregon.
