Henry Compton Jr.

Obituary Condolences

Devoted family man
Retired Alamogordo Department of Public Safety police Cpl. Henry Compton Jr. passed away July 7, 2008. Henry relocated to the Alamogordo area in 1955 from Texarkana, Texas. He began his law enforcement career with the Otero County Sheriff's Department in 1970, later joining the Department of Public Safety in 1974.  Henry broke the color barrier in his early years of law enforcement by becoming the first African American hired to serve the citizens of Otero County and Alamogordo. During his law enforcement career he was recognized for his outstanding work, earning several certificates of merit and the Combat Cross. After his retirement he served on the state's Community Corrections Board, which assisted counselors and correction officers in dealing with area youth entering a corrections facility.
Henry loved the art of boxing and under the tutelage of former Alamogordo mayor and lifetime friend Frank Carr he began boxing, capturing a Golden Gloves championship title. During Henry's active police career and after his retirement he used boxing as a way to forge an active commitment with the youth in the local community. Many of the young men in Alamogordo, including his sons, trained and competed in local area and national boxing competitions.
In the early 1960s Henry and his wife, Inella, established and operated several businesses in the Alamogordo area, including Compton's Janitorial and Cleaning Supply and Quality Cleaners.
Henry united in holy matrimony in 1959 to Inella Davis, and they became the parents of eight children: Ms. Georgia Davis, of Alamogordo; Mr. Walter Compton, of Beaumont, Texas; Ms. Dorothy Taylor, of Alamogordo; Ms. Delinda Compton, of Humble, Texas; Mr. Sheldon Compton (Vicki), of Alamogordo; Ms. Gloria Compton, of Humble, Texas; Mrs. Joyce Thomas (Steve), of Hope Mills, N.C.; and Nathaniel Compton, of Alamogordo.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2008, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Forney officiating.
Family will greet friends from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. before the service.
The Compton family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home.
