Herman William "Shorty" Buie Obituary
Shorty Buie, 84, of Caballo, left his temporary home on this earth and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 29, 2011. Shorty was born May 24, 1926, in Cloudcroft to James Alexander Buie and Minnie Sewell Buie.
Shorty grew up in Cloudcroft and he loved being in the mountains. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Shorty worked for the Otero County Electric Co-Op and for the railroad. He had the most amazing stories to tell about Cloudcroft in the "early days" and about the railroad that ran up from Alamogordo. He was also the owner and operator of Buie Garage, which was located on Burro Street in the building that became the Pine Stump Mall. On April 15, 1945, Shorty married Dorothy Wingfield and they had three children: Terry, Cheryl and Kathleen.
Shorty is survived by his brother Marvin and wife, Pat; sisters Julia and Jessie; son Terry Buie and wife, Beth; daughter Kathleen Welch and husband, Tim; and his son-in-law Malcolm Denney. He is also survived by his grandchildren Teresa Buie, Kerry Dolezalak, Jennifer Roberts, Glenn Denney, Bill Denney and Carl Welch. These grandchildren blessed him with 10 great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; his daughter Cheryl; his brothers John and Chester; and his sisters Nina and Dorothy.
A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2011, at Hamilton O'Dell Funeral Home.
The Buie family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place locally at PCS.
