Ida Bell Timms

1919 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Ida Bell Timms, 94, our beloved grandmother, family historian, resident fishing expert and all-time Bible trivia champion, passed away at her home on Thursday, May 16, 2013.
She was honored at a private service on Monday, May 20, 2013, followed by burial at Monte Vista Cemetery.
Born in 1919 as one of 11 children, Ida's life took her from the Texas cotton fields to the California workplace. Widowed at 19, she overcame obstacles as a single mother in the segregated South to raise her son. Curious and bold, she was the first African American to open a savings account in her town. She was a hard worker and, in retirement, was an avid fisherman, wise family adviser and board game player.
Ida was preceded in death by her son Edward V. White.
She is survived by daughter-in-law Bettye White; grandchildren Gary, Bridgette, Ken, Darryl and Jocelyn; and many loving great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Ida's faith, intrepid determination and good common sense have shaped the direction of our family. She taught us all that great distances can be traveled and that obstacles can be overcome, and reminded us to relentlessly work toward being the best that we could be. While she will be greatly missed, the values she exemplified live on in the generations that have followed.
The Timms family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
