Ira Elwin Putman Obituary
Ira Elwin Putman of Boise, Idaho, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, in Yuma, Ariz., at the age of 84. Ira was born in Kuna, Idaho, on Oct. 15, 1925, to Ira Estel and Ann Zola Putman. He graduated from Kuna High School in 1943. Ira served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was honorably discharged in late 1946.
On June 15, 1948, Ira married Margaret W. Carr (Marge), of Alamogordo. Ira graduated from the University of Idaho with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering in 1952. He and Marge had two sons, Gene and Howard.
Ira had a long career as a civil engineer with the United States Air Force starting in the fall of 1952 at White Sands Proving Grounds and Holloman Air Force Base near Alamogordo. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1987 after 35 years of service at such Air Force bases as Holloman, Kadena (Okinawa, Japan), Tan Son Nhut (Vietnam), Beale (California), Davis Monthan (Arizona) and McConnell (Kansas). He and Marge traveled in the Far East and saw many countries.
Ira and Marge retired to Mapleton, Ore., to do some fishing and traveling to visit family and friends. Ira volunteered with the Oregon Department of Game and Fish in its Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) for several years. Marge died in Mapleton in 1993 and Ira moved back to Idaho and lived near Weiser.
In 1999, Ira met Ellen McMikle, of Boise, Idaho. Ira and Ellen became snow birds with the summers spent in Boise and the winters spent in Yuma. Ira and Ellen were married Feb. 19, 2010, in Yuma.
Ira is survived by wife, Ellen, of Boise; sons Gene, of Denver, and Howard, of San Diego, Gene's wife, Mary, daughter Andrea and son Brian. Other family members include Ira's sister Alice Eichelburger and her family, of Kuna, Idaho; his sister-in-law Eleanor Putman, of Meridian, Idaho, and her family; and his sister-in-law Madevern Davis, of Valdosta, Ga., and her family.
Memorial services are pending in Boise with the date to be determined. Donations may be made to the University of Idaho in Moscow, College of Engineering where a scholarship is being set up in his honor.
