Ivon J. Curtis Obituary
Ivon J. Curtis went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011. Ivon was the second of three sons born to Cara Ivon Curtis and Ellie Mae Stirman Curtis on Sept. 16, 1925, in Mayhill.
He went to school in Mayhill and Cloudcroft, where he graduated. After graduation, he helped his father and worked for the Forest Service and post office in Alamogordo. When World War II broke out, he joined the Navy Seabees. After being discharged April 1, 1946, he met Christine Clements in Hope and was married April 30, 1947.
Ivon and Christine lived in Mayhill for two years and started a family while he worked for his father and at various jobs. Ivon decided he couldn't make a living in Mayhill, so he moved his family to Roswell in 1950 to become an electrician. After retiring from J&G Electric in Roswell, he was able to pursue his lifelong passion of ranching.
Ivon's hobbies included hunting and fishing. He enjoyed the outdoors and was a very skilled dancer. He always had a long line of willing dance partners. Ivon was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for more than 60 years. He was also a life member of the Elks, Eagles and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Ivon was preceded in death by his wife, Christine; parents; two brothers, Elmer and Dwain Curtis; and his son-in-law Elzy Perry.
Ivon is survived by his sister-in-law Marjorie Curtis and his children Sharon Y. Perry, of Tularosa; Larry Curtis and his wife, Joyce, of Roswell; Patricia and her husband, Jim Popovich, of Seattle; and Ivon Reed Curtis, of Roswell.
He is also survived by three granddaughters, Christa Ashley and her husband, Darin, of Tucson, Ariz., Lori K. Coupland and her husband, Dan, of Piñon, and Jamie Popovich, of Seattle; five great-grandchildren, Brandon and Bailey, of Seattle, Olivia, of Tucson, and Kylee and Curt, of Piñon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at Mayhill Church of Christ with Eddie Coleman officiating. Interment will follow at the Mayhill Cemetery. There will be a fellowship meal at the Mayhill Community Center following the services.
Pallbearers include Jack Coupland, Dan Coupland, Bud Curtis, Tate Curtis, Ray Mounts and Reed Stirman. Honorary pallbearers are R.L. Posey, Dwight Fulton, Johnny Watson, Aris Frizzell and Randy Stadjuhar.
Ivon's family would like to thank the staff at the Aristocrat for his years of loving care.
If you would like to make a donation in Ivon's name, it can be made to the Mayhill Community Center.
