Lawyer and artist
Jack T. Whorton, 87, formerly a longtime resident and attorney in Alamogordo, passed away Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, in New Orleans.
Jack was born Sept. 22, 1923, in Birmingham, Ala.
He is predeceased by his mother and father, Romaine and Delia Whorton; a brother, Dick Whorton; and a son, Larry Whorton.
He is survived by his wife Dona Lief, of New Orleans, and her two sons, Aram and Shane; his daughter Diane and Nate; and stepsons Mark, Paul and Joe.
Jack served in the Army as an aerial photographer during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of staff sergeant, earning three medals and a ribbon for his service. He obtained his law degree from the University of Chicago and practiced law in Alamogordo for 40 years. He was greatly admired by many of his colleagues, both from the bar and from the bench.
He arrived in New Orleans in February 1995, just in time for Mardi Gras. He loved the jazz, food, ambiance and cultural diversity of New Orleans. After a long hiatus from art, he - "Theo" -began a series of paintings in 1996 based on a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, which resulted in a show at the Hildebrand Gallery.
A memorial gathering of friends and family was held at his home in New Orleans.
