James Boone

Obituary Condolences

James R. "Jim" Boone, 76, of Alamogordo, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, in Alamogordo.
Jim was born April 13, 1932, in Fairmont, W.Va., to James Dwight and Betty Loretta (Jeffers) Boone. He graduated from Springfield High School in Akron, Ohio. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served his country for 20 years before being medically retired as a radioman chief.
During his naval career, he served on the U.S.S. Macon with the 8th Fleet in the Korean War and volunteered to serve one year in the Vietnam War. After his retirement, he went to work for civil service at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., for more than 20 years before his retirement.
While at Fort Huachuca he worked with the M.A.R.S. communication program and pursued a degree in business administration.
Jim came to know the Lord while in the service of his country and entered into a relationship with Jesus Christ in his young adult years. He moved to Alamogordo in 2000, where he lived until his death.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Nancy J. Boone, of the family home; two daughters, Cindy Boone of Alamogordo, and Rebecca Burke and her husband, Allen, of Oak Harbor, Wash.; two grandsons, James Burke and his wife, Toyah, of Fort Lewis, Wash., and Doug Burke of Oak Harbor; a sister-in-law, Ida Boroski and her husband, Walter, of Tularosa; a niece, Sharon Reynolds, of Akron; a cousin, Patty Reile of Fayetteville, N.C.; and many other family members who affectionately called him "Uncle Bobby."
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Joe Woodard, of Akron; and a niece, Debbie Paxton, of Akron.
Family, friends and neighbors will all miss Jim, with his friendly smile and willingness to lend a helping hand when needed. He had a tender heart for dogs and cats, and enjoyed feeding the wild birds. He especially cared for young children, and one of the annual projects he held dear was to donate winter coats for children.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, in the Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Moon officiating.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy.
