James (Jim) S. Lawshe Jr. Obituary

James (Jim) S. Lawshe Jr. of Kalaheo, Kauai County, Hawaii, and more recently Phoenix, died Saturday, August 30, 2014. Jim was the son of the late James Sr. and Gladys Lawshe.

He was born on Nov. 4, 1924, in Los Angeles, graduated from LA High school and received a bachelor's degree in naval science from the University of Southern California, before entering the Navy in 1944.
He married Coleen Fay from Boston in 1946. They lived in Alamogordo from 1948 through 1969, in the Dublin, Calif., from 1969 to 1973 and Kauai, Hawaii, from 1973 until 2012. Jim then moved to Phoenix due to advancing Parkinson disease.
Jim was an engineer for several missile ranges working in optical and electronic data collection for range operations. His career spanned early missile testing at White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base and into naval range testing in Hawaii. He had worked for Land-Air (Dynalectron) in New Mexico, Redstone Laboratories in California and SRS Technologies at Barking Sands in Kauai until his retirement in 1999 at age 75.
He loved being around the ocean, having spent summers growing up on Catalina Island. Jim brought an engineering bent to many home activities. For example, he created a Rube Goldberg type watering system on Kauai for the entire yard which operated from a lanai 'control center' to the amusement and sometimes the dismay of his family.
He loved to be outdoors especially doing yard work. His interests over the years included furniture making, photography, computers, audiobooks, winemaking, rock hounding and shelling, jewelry making, camping, raising pigeons and rabbits, but most of all taking care of his family.
He and Coleen always welcomed friends and family into their home, including an exchange student from Seng Tanrattana, Laos, for a year in Alamogordo. He was an active member of Lion's Club and Rotary in Alamogordo. He was also a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church and the Noblemen society in Kalaheo. Jim and Coleen had many great friends during their years in Alamogordo and Kauai.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Hey-Hey (Mary Hester) and Jo May (Johanna May); brother Dan (Henry Daniel); daughter Judy (Judith) and his beloved wife Coleen.

He is survived by four of his five children--Jim and his wife Cyndy; Eddie and his wife Valerie; Barry and John; Judy's husband Lenny Freitas; seven grandchildren: Brandon and Bryson Freitas; Jeffery, Eric, Heather, Jason and Kurtis Lawshe, and five great-grandchildren: Amelia and Quinn Bennett, and Jonas, Hannah and Maris Lawshe.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to a charity of your own choosing. His memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18 with a Mass, burial and reception to follow at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo, Hawaii.
