World War II veteran
James R. Smith, 84, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2008, at his home in Alamogordo. He was born Nov. 22, 1923, in Goshen, N.Y., to James S. and Matilda (Reid) Smith. 
He served in the Army from 1943 to 1950. He was a life member of the VFW Post 7686 in Alamogordo and a charter member of VFW Post 5523, Wallkill, N.Y. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Fraternal Order of Eagles, DAV, American Legion and a retired member of the Ontario Volunteer Fire Company in Middletown, N.Y.
Survivors include three sons, Dwight Smith and his wife Carolyn, of Thompson Ridge, N.Y., Jerry and Sue Smith, of Alamogordo, and Roger Smith and his wife Pat, of Alamogordo; one brother, William Smith and wife Alma; sister-in-law Ida Smith, all from Middletown, N.Y.; sister-in-law Mavis Shotts, of Bessemer, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. 
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Salena "Sally"; two brothers; a sister; his parents; and a great-grandson. 
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 27, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel. 
Pallbearers include Kevin Smith, Kyle Smith, Brian Smith, Brian Joe Torres, Ernest Skaggs and P.J. Henderson.
