1930 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
James W. Tooke went to sleep in Jesus on Wednesday, April 18, 2012. He was born in 1930 in Rochelle, La., to Paula Montgomery and James W. Tooke. He married Ila June Beauchamp in 1955.
He is survived by his wife and their three children: son Jon Tooke and wife, Maritza, of New Jersey; daughters Love Julian and husband, Mike, and Jayme Berry and husband, Keith, of Alamogordo; and grandchildren Heather Bash and husband Derrick, Christine Lorett, John Lorett, Jessica, Jonathan and Melody Berry, of Alamogordo, and Leigh Ann Tooke, of New Jersey. He also has great-grandchildren Dax Bash, Sydney and Damian Lorett, and Shayna Tooke. He is has two living siblings: Col. Richard Tooke and wife, Sandi, of Hot Springs, Ark., and Sandra Funderburk, of Shreveport, La.
Jim served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He also worked as an aerospace engineer for Hughes Aircraft, where he developed missiles and spacecraft, culminating in the Surveyor spacecraft, the first craft to make a soft landing on the moon.
After retirement, Jim became fire chief of the Burro Flats Fire Department. He was a Gideon who sent Bibles all over the world, provided for his family, doted on his wife and opened his home to the homeless. He lived a very long and rich life.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2012, at Cottonwood Christian Fellowship, 7035 U.S. Highway 70 North, in Alamogordo, with the Rev. Robert Smith officiating.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations of Gideon Bibles be made through Cottonwood Christian Fellowship.
The Tooke family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
