Jerry Brian Overby, 31, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, in Alamogordo. Jerry was born June 22, 1976, in Alamogordo. He graduated from Goddard High School in Roswell in 1994 and received his associate of arts degree from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces in January 2006. Jerry was pursuing a career in the health field.
While attending high school, Jerry was in ROTC and became an Eagle Scout. After graduating high school, he married Francisca Garcia and enlisted in the military. Jerry served in the Army and the Army National Guard for a total of eight years. While enlisted in the Army, he served as an armorer and then as a medic in the National Guard.
Jerry was awarded the Army Commendation Medal (Fourth Award), Army Achievement Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal W/M Device, Army Service Ribbon, Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Grenade Bar, Marksman Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar and Army Lapel Button while serving on active duty at Fort Hood and in the Army National Guard in Ft Bliss.
Jerry was also a fourth degree black belt in tae kwon do and was selected to be an alternate for the Army tae kwon do team. While in the Army, Jerry volunteered numerous times for the Bataan Memorial Death March. Jerry was an avid reader and movie buff, especially films about the Christmas season. He enjoyed cooking and preparing creative foods and collecting wolf art.
Jerry was employed as a mental health technician and respite provider. He was committed to the welfare of those he served. During the Thanksgiving holiday, Jerry and his fiancée, Kristen Nicole Redpath, donated their time to help deliver meals to people who were homebound and in need.
Survivors include his mother, Judy Overby; his sisters, Jessica Overby and Jenny Torres; his paternal grandparents Ralph and Norma Overby; his ex-wife Francisca Overby; his fiancée's parents, Steve and Judy Holmes; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his fiancée, Kristen Nicole Redpath, and his father, Jerry Donald Overby.
The family extends an invitation to all friends and family to his viewing on Friday, Jan. 4 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Alamogordo Funeral Home. Memorial services will follow on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Alamogordo Funeral Home, 2301 First St., Alamogordo, NM.
Cremation will take place locally at PCS entrusted to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home.
