Former School Bus Contractor and Rancher
Jesse T. Bates, 87, of Mayhill, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Bates was born June 7, 1921, in Hope to Leslie and Carrie (Schrier) Bates. He graduated from Hope High School in 1940. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps in the 8th Air Force in the United Kingdom as a tail gunner on a B-24, and during the Korean conflict he served in the Air Force.
Survivors include a son, Jim Bates and his wife Karen of Grants; two daughters, Debbie Bates of Amarillo, Texas, and Donna Nicholson and her husband Eddie of Brownfield, Texas; seven grandchildren, Jared Bates and his wife Jeanne of Tulsa, Okla., Randall Bates and his wife Lena of Las Cruces, Tiffany Murray and her husband Brian of Abilene, Texas, Kenneth Gunter and his wife Shelley of Nolan, Texas, Lindsay Kelly and her husband Ryan of Buda, Texas, Jeremy Nicholson and his wife Charla of Lubbock, Texas, and Deanna Kennedy and her husband Clinton of Houston; four great grandchildren, Ian Bates of Tulsa, Okla., Conagher Bates of Las Cruces, and Nathan and Noah Nicholson of Lubbock, Texas; a brother Eugene Bates and his wife Mary of Caballo, three sisters, Mary Ragsdale of Roswell, Carrie Foote and her husband Norm of Woodbridge, Va., and Serena Fernau and her husband Larry of Show Low, Ariz.; a sister-in-law Deanie Bates of La Luz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 61 years, Lillian Bates, in April of this year; a brother, Bill Bates; and a grandson, Toby Nicholson.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 10 a.m. in the Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel with Eddy Coleman officiating.
Interment will follow in Mountain Acres Cemetery in Mayhill with military honors by the Army.
Pallbearers will be Mr. Bates' grandchildren and their spouses.
