Jigger Olsen Obituary
Jigger was born July 16, 1924, in Phoenix to Lora and Dick Davis. She moved with her parents to El Paso in 1936. She was christened and grew up as Mary Virginia but in high school a friend, groping for her name, referred to her as Jigger. The name somehow caught on and she soon became known as Jigger to everyone and eventually had it legally added to her name.
She graduated from El Paso High School in 1941 and from Texas College of Mines (now UTEP) in 1943. While at college, she met Eddie in an English class and he soon asked her for a date. After that date, neither ever dated anyone else. They married on Oct. 26, 1943, when Eddie was home on his only leave during World War II. They were married for 68 years.
Jigger was a teacher in the Ysleta school district in El Paso until Eddie was transferred from El Paso to Las Cruces in 1959. She taught in Las Cruces until another transfer brought them to Alamogordo in 1963. In Alamogordo, she taught at Chaparral Junior High School and pursued.
She got her master's degree in guidance and counseling at New Mexico State University-Las Cruces. She remained a counselor at Chaparral Junior High for more than 20 years until she retired in 1982.
She was the first woman elected to the Alamogordo City Commission, served as mayor pro-tem and mayor. She was appointed to the board of directors for Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital where she served for over 25 years. Jigger was also a lifetime member of the hospital auxiliary. She was a member of PEO BI Chapter. In 1980 she was honored as Alamogordo Citizen of the Year.
She served on numerous committees for different organizations and enjoyed every aspect of being able to serve wherever she was needed. Jigger once joked about having a t-shirt made that read "Stop me before I volunteer for anything else!"
She was an angel sent to earth to help others find proper direction in their lives and she has now gone home.
She is survived by her loving husband Eddie; son, Dave (Anita) Olsen; daughter Barbara (Glendon) Moss; grandchildren Malia (Jasen) Jones, Chad (Allison) Moss, Jarilyn (Joel) Butler, Jill (John) Gouker; and great-grandchildren Taylor Jones, Jadon Jones, Landon Moss, Seth Gouker, Alec Gouker, and Natalie Butler. She will be missed by all her family and friends including special friend and neighbor, Linda Connelly and her grandson Connor.
The family thanks all the caring people at Casa Arena Blanca for their kindness and care of Jigger during her stay with them.
Private services have taken place.
