Jim Mitchel Smith Jr. Obituary
Jim Mitchel Smith Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, in Alamogordo after an extended illness.
Jim was born Sept. 26, 1945, in Mansfield, Ohio. Jim was a graduate of Mansfield Senior High School. Jim served in the United States Air Force for 22 years, retiring at the rank of senior master sergeant. Jim proudly served his country at Misawa Air Force Base, Japan; the Republic of Vietnam; Chicksands Air Force Base, England; Travis Air Force Base, Calif; and retired at Mather Air Force Base, Calif.
Jim graduated from American River College in 1987. Jim served as a federal employee at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz., Incirlik Air Base in Turkey and Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, La. He retired at Holloman Air Force Base.
Jim was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Jim was an avid sportsman and played on the basketball and football teams of the Air Force bases at which he was stationed. Jim will best be remembered for his lifelong love of golf.
Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Judina Smith; father George Swarn Jr.; and sister Ruby Farmer.
Jim is survived by his mother, Louise Smith, of Decatur, Ala.; daughter Laverne Pfab, of Fishers, Ind.; son Derek Smith, of Las Vegas; grandchildren Keirra Harris, Ethan Pfab, Cedric Thomas and Destiny Thomas; five brothers, Eddie Smith, Duane Smith, of Sacramento, Calif; Terry (Shirley) Swarn, of Denver, Michael Swarn, of Mansfield, and George (Irma) Swarn, of Mansfield; three sisters, Gloria (Leslie) Huffman, of Mansfield, Wenda (Winston) Burnom, of Mansfield, and Donna (Sam) Fuller, of Mansfield; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The family will greet friends Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, with a military chaplain officiating.
Full military honors will be provided by the Holloman Air Force Base Steel Talons Honor Guard.
Should friends desire, contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
The Smith family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
