Jo Ann Hill Obituary
Jo Ann Hill entered into eternity on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013. She died at her temporary home in Tucson, Ariz., with her son and daughter-in-law by her side.
Jo was born in Houston, Texas, on Nov. 16, 1938. She lived most of her childhood in Alamogordo and was a proud graduate of Alamogordo High School, Class of 1957. She attended New Mexico State University on a music scholarship and graduated in 1961 with a B.S. in health and physical education. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority at NMSU and twirled and played in the Aggie band. She achieved a master's degree in health education from University of Texas El Paso in 1971.
Her career as an educator spanned 51 years. Part of that was spent as a public school teacher, but the majority of her career was spent in health education at NMSU. She officially retired from NMSU in 1994 and moved to UTEP.
It didn't take her long to resume teaching part-time at NMSU where she stayed until she was diagnosed with cancer in the spring of 2012. She touched countless lives at both universities. In the 1980s, she worked as a consultant to Native Americans on health issues and enjoyed traveling and speaking to tribes around the nation. Jo was proud of her Native heritage.
She is survived by her son Andy Hill, daughter-in-law Lucy and three adoring grandchildren Jordan, Drew and Natalie, all of Tucson.
She was a friend to many and an avid Aggie sports fan! She especially loved to support the athletes in her classes. Her passions included Aggie basketball, bowling and dancing to the music of Bob Wills with a solid partner .
Her family would like to invite friends to attend a DROP-IN celebration of her life at NMSU at Aggie Tower from 3-5p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13.
The Professor Jo Hill Memorial Scholarship Fund has been set up at NMSU. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the NMSU Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 3590, Las Cruces, NM 88003.
