Joan Claire Lenzo Obituary

Joan Claire Lenzo entered into eternal peace on March 3, 2016, at her home in Alamogordo, New Mexico, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Joan was born on Nov.7, 1937, in Harvey, Ill., the daughter of John and Julia Genovese. A devote Catholic, she attended Ascension Parochial Grade School K thru 8, completing primary education in 1951. She graduated from Aquinas Catholic High School for Girls in Chicago, Ill., in 1955. She went on to receive a nursing diploma from St. Margaret's Nursing School, Hammond, Ind., in 1958. After receiving her diploma, she went on to take her state board exams for Indiana. She successfully passed the exams and became a registered nurse. This was the start of a long and satisfying career in nursing and care giving.

She met her husband, Jim, of 56 years while attending psychiatric training during her nursing education. They married in 1959, and moved to Alamogordo where Jim pursued employment on Holloman AFB. After arriving in Alamogordo, Joan was immediately employed by Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital, her first job being Surgery Supervisor. Ensuing employment was obstetrics with Dr. Fellows, obstetrics at Holloman AFB Hospital, and then obstetrics and emergency room nursing at Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital. She considered herself a professional nurse who always placed her patient's well-being first and foremost. She completed her career in Utilization Review and Discharge Planning at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center (GCRMC). She retired in 1997. Her love for patient care was never ending, which prompted her to join the GCRMC Hospital Auxiliary, where she was an active and dedicated member until her passing. She had a loving and generous heart, and was always giving to others. She was quick to volunteer within the many organizations she belonged to. No task was too big or too small for her to lend a helping hand. She attended to the needs of a great number of people in the community and she will be sorely missed.

She was a lifelong communicant of St. Jude Catholic Church and a member and active participant in the Altar Rosary Society, numerous ministries of the Church, and tended to the religious education of the youth of the parish. She loved to dance and she and Jim were members of the KIOT Kickers and Cactus Moon dance groups. Hardly a weekend could go by without seeing this couple strutting their stuff at various dance halls in the community. Her love of the outdoors was fulfilled by the many trips and outings she shared with the Dust Devils RV Club and the Los Paisanos Chapter of the Good Sam Club, and the fond memories of the friends and families she traveled with.

She was predeceased by parents, John and Julia.

She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her husband Jim; her son Vincent (Dana) Lenzo and grandchildren Dalton and Adam of Ruidoso, N.M.; daughter Susan (Mark) Bolinger and grandchildren Ian and Trisha Meg of Alamogordo, N.M.; son Steve Lenzo of Alamogordo, N.M., and grandchildren Trey (Holly) of Houston, Texas and Tristan of Albuquerque, N.M.; her brothers Robert (Liz) Genovese of Edina, Minn.; Eugene (Betty) Genovese of St. John, Ind.; and close and dear family friend, Judi Francis, of Alamogordo, N.M.

The Lenzo family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the services. Cremation has taken place at PCS.

A prayer vigil will be held at the Alamogordo Funeral Home, 2301 First St., Alamogordo, New Mexico, on Friday, March 18, 2016, with David Marcus, officiating. The service will start at 7 p.m. A Rosary will be recited by the St. Jude Rosary Society.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday morning, March 19, 2016, at St. Jude Church, 1404 College Avenue, starting at 11 a.m., with Father Tom Hoffman, S. J., presiding. Interment will be in the St. Jude Columbarium immediately following the service. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the GCRMC Hospital Auxiliary and the Knights of Columbus Council 3355 Ladies Auxiliary.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staffs of the GCRMC Infusion Center, the GCRMC Cancer Center, and the Alamogordo Home Health Care and Hospice for their support and care during her ordeal.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude United in Ministry Fund, or the .

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7.
