Joan Kittie (Terrell) Achille Obituary

Joan was born Jan. 21, 1939, in Las Vegas, Nev., to Starle W. Terrell and Helen M. (Booth) Terrell. She died in Alamogordo on Feb. 20, 2015.

Joan grew up in Tonopah, Nev., with her sisters Joyce and Lynne. Through her childhood years her family owned and operated a fluorspar, tungsten and gold mine, as well as running the town's newspaper, the Tonopah Times Bonanza.
Joan married Arnold R. Achille on April 6, 1957, and they had two daughters, Robyn Dee and Tamara Helen. Arnold was career Air Force, and the family moved every year with the military through seven states. The family camped, fished and went hiking at every opportunity.
She was well known for her well-developed sense of humor, sharp writing skills and high intelligence as well as being creative and artistic. Joan enjoyed archaeology, birdwatching, music, and artifact and fossil hunting. She was an avid genealogist and traced her family's lines back to the 1500s.
Joan was a loving and nurturing stay-at-home mom, who volunteered at school, assisted on field trips and was always supportive and kind.
She loved animals and cared for many strays. She taught herself to be able to field identify most North American bird species.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents and sister Joyce Boykin.

She is survived by her daughters Robyn Macdonald Munro and Tami Sauerman; sister Lynne Orwick and her husband John; grandchildren Jonah Harris and his wife Heather, Erica Love and her husband Brad, and CassieLee Butcher. She is also survived by nephews Mike, Ken and Tony Rychtarik; nieces Kathy Pettycrew and Andrea Childress; great-grandchildren Hannah, Connor, Andrew and Isabella Harris and Giovanni Trujillo, plus great- nieces and nephews.
