Joan Mildred Sabine was born Nov. 11, 1912, in London to Bernard and Antoinette Sabine. Joan's parents divorced prior to World War I, and her mother later met and married a Canadian, Robert Bell, who adopted both Joan and her older brother Roy. The family emigrated to Canada in 1921 and later moved to Metaline Falls in northeastern Washington state.
Joan left Metaline Falls for Spokane, Wash., to finish high school at North Central High School. She graduated in June 1931 and continued her education at Heald School of Business, then entered the business world as a bookkeeper.
Joan married Wilbur Patrick in May 1939 and became a naturalized citizen of the United States on Dec. 16, 1939. They have two children, Sharon and Robert, and raised their family in Spokane. In 1966, they moved to Cape Canaveral, Fla., where Wilbur took a job with Bendix Corporation for the Apollo Moon Project.
Joan retired from Metropolitan Insurance Company in November 1977, and she and Will moved to Alamogordo for their retirement years. Wilber passed away in April 1980. Joan continued to make Alamogordo her home and worked in real estate and insurance. She was a member of the Elks Does and Alamo Chapter No. 11, Order of the Eastern Star. She served as president of the Does and as worthy matron of Alamo Chapter No. 11 in 1994. She also served New Mexico Grand Chapter of Eastern Star as a grand representative.
Joan moved to Gilroy, Calif., in 2003. She affiliated with Magnolia Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in 2005, and served as treasurer in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Joan passed away as a result of an accident on Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at the age of 96.
Survivors include her daughter Sharon Brentnall and her husband, Robert, of Morgan Hills, Calif.; her son Robert Patrick and his wife, Heather, of Alamogordo; a granddaughter, Elise Alexander, and her husband, James, of Gilroy; two grandsons, Brian Patrick and his wife, Carolyn, of El Paso, and Terry Patrick and his wife, Sarah, of Tucson, Ariz.; three great-grandchildren, Eric, Jonathan and Bailey; and a half-brother, Peter Sabine.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her husband, by a half-brother, Roy Bell, and a daughter-in-law, Wilma Patrick.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1318 14th St., with the Rev. John T. Camp officiating.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Alexander, Brian Patrick, Terry Patrick, J.B. Blalock, Gene Rayhart and Billy M. Wallace.
Services are under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
