John A. Worley Obituary
John A. Worley, 90, passed away on May 25, 2013, in Alamogordo..
He was born on July 22, 1922, in Simpson, Kan., to William and Nellie (Stackhouse) Worley.
He graduated from high school in Snowflake, Ariz., in 1940 and moved to Alamogordo. As a young man he began working in the logging industry for M.R. Prestridge where he met the raven-haired beauty Alice in the mountains at the cookhouse where the lumber workers would go to eat.
It was ""love at first sight"" for John and Alice, and in no time at all, they decided to ""tie the knot."" John married Alice Robinson, Nov. 4,1942, in Alamogordo.
As World War II was busy taking all the young men of America to fight for Uncle Sam, John, of course, was soon included in that number and served bravely as a sergeant in the U. S. Army. After he had enjoyed married life for a short while, John was sent to Europe where he experienced the horrors of war and fought in the Normandy D-Day Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. Alice stayed behind and prayed and waited for her soldier. Their daughter, Sharon, was soon born. When Sharon was 2 years old, she and her mommy celebrated John's return with much aplomb.
For years, John was in business in Alamogordo, where he was a truck driver, plumber and business owner. He and Alice raised their two daughters, Sharon and Mona Kay, who both graduated from Alamogordo High School. He was a member of numerous construction and trucking associations. John worked until the age of 85 and finally retired in 2007.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law Don Messer; three sisters, Fay Moody, Vonda Ice, and Mary Lou Knuth; and two brothers-in-law, Lee Bradley, Otis Talley and his best friend Elvoyd Barton.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years Alice Worley of the family home; two daughters, Sharon Gray and husband Norman; and Mona Kay Messer. He also has four grandchildren, Terrell K. Gray and fiancé, Shelly Smith; Shauna D. Brotz and husband Jon; Don A. Messer and wife Beth; Tracy White and husband Allen; five great-granddaughters and six great-grandsons. He has three sisters, Sarah Bradley, Peggy Talley, Fran Lane and husband Phil and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Monte Vista Cemetery with Pastor Joe Robinson officiating.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Terrell Gray, Ken Lane, Wes Robinson, Randy Rabon, Jeff Rabon, Tim Rabon, Chaney Rabon, Thomas Rabon and Samuel Rabon.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Norman Gray, Jon Brotz, Don A. Messer, Allen White, Phil Lane, John Robinson, Norman Lane and Junior Howell.
The Worley family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
