John David Whitaker Obituary
John David Whitaker, 72, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2012, in Las Cruces. He was born May 22, 1939, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Francis Joseph and Marie Cecile (Martin) Whitaker.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant. He moved to Alamogordo from Capitan in 2005, where they lived for over 20 years.
John is survived by his two daughters, Melinda Whitaker Lyons and Melanie Hallbeck; five grandchildren, Jonathan Lyons, Grayson Lyons, Abby Hallbeck, Jack Hallbeck and Joshua Hallbeck; sons-in-law James Lyons and Jorgen T. Hallbeck, all of Alamogordo; and a brother, Robert Whitaker, of Youngstown.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrum Mayfield Whitaker; his parents; and two brothers, Thomas Whitaker and Paul Whitaker.
John met the love of his life, Myrum Mayfield, in 1968 in Clovis. They were married Aug. 25, 1970. They celebrated 34 years of marriage before she passed away on Dec. 15, 2004. He spent 27 years in the Air Force and traveled the U.S. and Europe with his family. He was stationed in Germany, Tucson, Ariz., Sumter, S.C. and Leesville, La., finally retiring in Capitan. He also spent two years abroad in Saudi Arabia working for a private contract company.
He was an active member of the Capitan community, where he served on the Capitan Board of Trustees and headed different committees. He had many close friends in the community he so loved. He then moved to Alamogordo in 2005 and he quickly settled into a happy routine of visiting the Alamo Senior Center, attending events at the Flickinger Center for Performing Arts, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
John always had a kind word for everyone, made people laugh and smile with his good humor, and loved supporting the music and arts of Alamogordo, especially any production put on by AMT. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and we will all consider ourselves very blessed to have had such a wonderful man in our lives.
Memorial services for John David Whitaker will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Grace United Methodist Church, 1206 Greenwood Lane, Alamogordo, with the Rev. Mary Taken officiating.
The Whitaker family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
