John Ellwood Osborne Obituary
John Ellwood Osborne, 78, left this world and stepped into the arms of his Savior Saturday, May 18, 2013. John was born Dec. 25, 1934, in Damascus, Va., to David Osborne and Callie Neeves Osborne.
He joined the United States Air Force in July 1953 and came to Holloman Air Force Base in 1954. He married Alma Ruth Janes in 1955. John and Alma enjoyed their life in the Air Force, living in Japan, the Philippines, Louisiana, three bases in Florida, Virginia and Arizona. John also spent a year in Thailand. After his retirement from the Air Force, John worked in civil service at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, Ariz.
In 1985, he and Alma moved to Cloudcroft where he worked several years for the Cloudcroft schools. In 1994, he started to work at The Counseling Center in Alamogordo where he worked until his health failed and he retired.
John never knew a stranger. He would start a conversation with a stranger and make a new friend. He loved airplanes. He worked as an aircraft mechanic while in the Air Force, and if he could have worked on the Stealth Fighter, he would have re-enlisted one more time. While stationed in Japan, he worked on the People to People Program with Colonel Dean Hess.
He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone. He often brought home young, homesick airmen for a home-cooked meal and they often became a part of the family. Some have kept in touch over the years.
John was preceded in death by his parents, brother William, sisters Sarah Fleming, Imogene Grubb and Joan Dumblar; grandson Christopher Mark Osborne, and niece Gwen Osborne.
