John Francis "Jack" Turney Obituary

John Francis "Jack" Turney, Jr., 94, of Alamogordo, N.M. passed away at home on Friday, Jan. 8, 2016. Jack was born on Dec. 30, 1921, in Chama, N.M., to John Francis Turney, Sr. and Rachel Mary Thompson.

Jack was a 1940 alumnus of Alamosa High School and received his Master's degree from Adams State College in 1948. He was a WWII Veteran who enlisted in the Marine Corps and was then transferred to the Navy, being discharged in 1945 as an Ensign after serving in North Africa.

In 1949, he married Donna Faye "Betty" Mott, and together they had four children, Janet, Elizabeth, Brian and John. Jack worked for the National Park Service first as a Ranger at Bandelier National Monument, then as a staff archaeologist at NPS Southwest Regional Headquarters at Globe, Ariz., and then as the superintendent at Aztec Ruins, Walnut Canyon, White Sands, Padre Island National Seashore, and Buffalo National River, where he retired in 1980. He and his wife Betty operated the White Sands Concessions at White Sands National Monument from 1981 to 1996. He was a member of Alamogordo Rotary Club.

Jack is survived by his wife, Betty of the family home; daughters, Janet White of Alamogordo, N.M. and Elizabeth Schellman of Lawrence, Kan.; sons, Brian of Kingman, Ariz., and John of Alamogordo, N.M.; nephew, Davey Lee Johnson of Converse, Texas; he was grandfather to thirteen and great grandfather to sixteen.

The memorial service for John Turney will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1800 23rd Street, Alamogordo, N.M.

Inurnment will be held in the Santa Fe National Cemetery at a later date.

The Turney family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements.
