John I. Miller Obituary
John I. Miller was born Feb. 10, 1926, to Leonard and Claudia Idella (Lucas) Miller. He was the 11th of 12 children. He left home at age 15 and worked in the shipyards at Long Beach, Calif. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, he joined the Navy and spent most of World War II in Southeast Asia and Australia.
After the war, he attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he met Ruth Arlone Getter. The two were soon married. They moved to Alamogordo and started a business that continued for several years. He also worked at Goodyear, Tiny's Tire Town and Jim's Maytag and Repair.
John and Arlone have five children: Leonard Miller, Denise Scherer and her husband, Tony, Janise Eves and her husband, Kent, Sandra Krall and her husband, Thomas, and Charles Miller and his wife, Julie; eight grandchildren, David, Steven, Joseph, John, Renee, Christina, Zachary and Kira; and five great-grandchildren, Raegan, Kenna, Drew, Alexis and Kivah.
Dad enjoyed Sunday barbecues, White Sands and the mountains that surround Alamogordo. As small children, we would follow him around and he would take the time to tell us what he was doing, why he was doing it and how to do whatever project he was working on at that time. We soon realized there was nothing he could not do. He will be greatly missed by his sisters, and all of his children and grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at Christ Community Cemetery with Pastor Jack Brock officiating.
The Miller family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
