John Koval Obituary
Remembered
John Koval passed away on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, in Alamogordo at the age of 94.
John was born in East Youngstown, Ohio, on Oct. 30, 1915, to Czechoslovakian immigrants, John Felipe and Mary (Majernik) Koval.
John left home to join the CCC in 1934. He studied RADAR at Stanford University and worked for the Signal Corp. He moved to Alamogordo in 1949 and worked with Land Air/Dyncorp on White Sands Missile Range for 31 years.
John is well remembered for his volunteer efforts in the community. He received the Service to Mankind award from the Sertoma Club of Alamogordo. He delivered meals on wheels to the homebound in Alamogordo for many years. He was honored to participate in a ceremony at the White House in Washington, D.C., honoring retired senior volunteers on April 26, 1985.
John and Merry bought the old Antique Depot, formerly the Torrance Railroad Depot, and moved it to the north end of Alameda Park. He founded the Toy Train Depot there in 1988 and spent the next 21 years maintaining and operating a wide variety of old and new model trains for the pleasure of many residents and visitors to Alamogordo.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy; his brother Albert Koval; his sister Wilma Mickler and his parents.
John is survived by his wife of 25 years, Merry (Calder) Koval; his son John Charles Koval and wife, Joanne; his daughter Carol Bernstein and husband, Michael; his sister Mary Popovich; and numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted for John at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home chapel. A reception will follow at the Older American Center.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, tax deductible donations be made to the Toy Train Depot Inc.
The Koval family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place locally at PCS.
