John T. House Obituary

John T. House, 83, longtime Alamogordo resident, passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2017, at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, Colo., after a short illness. He was born March 8, 1934, in Sayre, Okla., to Cecil Albert and Zula Mae (Compton) House.

John House grew up in Sayre, Okla., where he was a member of the OK State Champion football team in 1950. He married the love of his life, Barbara Carole Yates, April 24, 1955. He graduated from Central State University in Edmond, Okla., and was recruited to teach school in Alamogordo. The Alamogordo Public Schools were in the top five school systems in the nation at that time. He taught the sciences at Alamogordo High School and Chaparral Middle School for forty years. He coached many sports from football, basketball and track to swimming. He truly cared about the lives of his students and athletes. He was always furthering his education. For many years he traveled to different colleges to advance his knowledge of the sciences. During this time, he met Clyde Tombaugh at a backyard BBQ, he studied at Berkley and attended the Seattle World's Fair. He was one of the original founders of OCARC (Otero County Association of Retarded Children, now Zia Therapy Center). He also worked for the US Forest Service for many summers and weekends in the Lincoln National Forest, and at the Alamogordo-White Sands Regional Airport. He retired in 1998. He was an avid sports enthusiast and was an even more avid Dallas Cowboys fan. He loved his football and he loved his grandchildren. He was a very kind, caring and loving person.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Barbara C. (Yates) House of the family home; two sons, Mark T. House and his wife, Diane, of Pueblo West, Colo., and R. Kent House and his wife, Lisa, of Alamogordo; a daughter, Amy Weider, and her husband, Ossi, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, Michael House and Julia House of Pueblo West, Colo., Micela Hurtado and her husband, Diego, of Lexington, Ky., Mark House of Alamogordo, Megan Weider of Denver, Colo., and Madeline Weider of Rochester, N.Y.; a brother, Neil House, of Dallas, Texas, and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Johnettia R. House, and his parents.
