John (Johnny) Warren Posey, 89, joined his beloved wife in glory on December 18, 2018.
John was born on December 15, 1929 to Loyd and Elizabeth Posey in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He resided throughout Otero county i.e., Mayhill, Cloudcroft, and Alamogordo with his parents, older brother, RL, and young sister, Lucy. He attended Mayhill and Cloudcroft schools, graduating highschool in 1947. It was while he was a sophomore that he met his future wife, Mary Edith Dove. The two were wed on November 16, 1947. The married couple settled in El Paso, TX, where he gained employment as a taxi driver. After being robbed at gun point, he quit driving and signed on as a switchman on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was during this time that his daughter, Edna Laverne, was born.
After 12 years working as a switchman, John decided to return to school full time (while still working the swing shift). He graduated after 3 years with a BS in Business. He applied to the Railroad with his new degree in hand and was offered an accounting position at their headquarters in San Francisco, CA. In November 1965, John and his family moved to Palo Alto, CA where he commuted by train to work. It was during this time period that John decided to further his education and earned two Master degrees in Business and Tax. He later earned a teaching certificate although he never taught and he became an Enrolled Agent so he could prepare tax returns outside of work.
It was during the 1970s that John and Edith moved from Palo Alto to the Santa Cruz mountains where they stayed until he retired. In 1988, they returned to Alamogordo to help care for ailing parents. After their daughter and her family moved to Mayhill in 1993 and John's mother died, they sold their home in Alamogordo and joined Laverne and her family on the same hill top but in a separate house. A few years later, after their daughter and her family returned to CA, John and Edith moved back to Alamogordo in 1998. In May 2015, Edith passed in to glory. John continued to live in their home until his death.
In his off hours, John and his family participated in church activities. He loved music and joined church choirs. He also loved fiddle music and joined other musicians at 5th Sunday Sings. His accounting skills were put to work; he became treasure of many a church. It was once said that no one had to worry about being cheated if John did his/her taxes because honesty was his trademark. That was his testament to his Lord, Jesus Christ.
Survivors include his daughter, Edna Laverne (Patrick) Jordan of Alamogordo, NM; his granddaughters, Deidre Marie (Jared) King of Whittier, CA; Heather Elizabeth Jordan of Brooklyn, NY; his great-grandchildren, Aaron David King and Elizabeth Anne King.
He was preceded in death by his Father, Loyd, and mother, Elizabeth, brother, RL, and sister, Lucy.
A graveside service for John Posey's family was held on Saturday, December 20 at Mountain Acres Cemetery, Mayhill, NM. Rev. Matt Henslee officiated and Billy Tucker played Amazing Grace on his fiddle.
Pallbearers were Terry Buttram, Jess Wood, Jim Wood, John Bookout, Jim Ward, and Riley Patterson. Refreshments were served afterwards at the home of Edna Wood in Alamogordo.
A Celebration Memorial in honor of John Posey's life will be held at Mayhill Baptist Church on 12/29 at 11 a.m. An open mic will be available during the celebration and afterwards at the luncheon that will be held in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Mayhill Baptist Church, 3510 U.S. Highway 82, Mayhill, NM 88330. Designate: Sound
The Posey family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.

John was a humble, loving and a dedicated servant for the Lord. When we first met John and Edith we were new Christians. They were a perfect example of God's love and service in His name. We will eternally be grateful for their influence in our personal journey. John was a non-judgmental friend. He guided and led always with love and patience. He made a difference in our lives.
