Johnie Ruth Bowers Hill Obituary
Johnie Ruth Bowers Hill went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. She was born Nov. 11, 1924, in Spur, Texas, to Marvin Lafayette Bowers and Ruth Stephen Oates Bowers.
She was blessed to have three brothers: Marvin Lee, Marcus and Tom Bowers.
She graduated from high school in Fort Stockton, Texas. She attended Texas Christian University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in history and later received a master's degree from Sul Ross State University.
She met the love of her life, Dawson Emmett Hill, and they married May 12, 1946, in Fort Stockton. They moved to Alamogordo in 1958, where she taught fourth grade at Sacramento Elementary until she retired in 1987.
Johnie was a member of the Fort Stockton Historical Society, loved to read, was an avid Cowboys fan, and had a deep love of politics.
Her daughters Barbara Simmons and her husband, Roger, of High Rolls; Debra Hagler, of Alamogordo; and Sandra Quest and her husband, John, of Canyon Lake, Texas; and Randy Gardner, her much-loved adopted son, of Austin, Texas, survive her. She is also survived by Luci Sternthal, her very dearest friend; her grandchildren Robin Townsend, Andy Simmons, Shawn Full-Oswalt and his wife, Sarah, Stephen Simmons and his wife, Amy, Melissa Oswalt, David Hagler, Preston Quest and Chase Quest; and great-grandchildren Trevor Parker and Kelsey Townsend, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Her husband, Dawson, and her brother, Tom, predeceased her.
A viewing will be held Friday, April 15, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home, with the funeral following at 2 p.m. Pastor Jack Brock will conduct the funeral service. Interment will be at Monte Vista Cemetery in Alamogordo.
