Retired from City Parks and Recreation
Jose Oscar Ortega, 86, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, entered into God's paradise Saturday, April 5, 2008, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Oscar was born Dec. 22, 1922, in El Paso, Texas, to Pedro and Pabla (Ramos) Ortega. He was reared in the Sacramento Mountains, as he lived in Marcia and in Russia Canyon. He worked in the CCC camps, and also contributed many endless hours while the Cloudcroft tunnel was under construction. He worked for Southwest and Prestridge Lumber sawmills. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps in Japan. He also served in the first sheriff's reserve under the supervision of Felix Work. He retired from the Alamogordo Parks and Recreation Department after 20 years of employment.
Oscar is survived by two sons, Mike Ortega, and Joe O. Ortega, his wife Diana A. Contreras and their family, Lisa, Daniel and Eric Benitez; he also leaves one special granddaughter, Amalia "Molly" Salazar, who he referred to as his "Baby."
During his life he raised two families and is survived by a special stepson, Peter Madrid, his wife Hope and their family, Melinda, P.J. and Margie. He also leaves another stepson, Vincent Madrid; eight stepdaughters, Gloria, Mary Helen, Virginia, Roseanna, Martha, Wendy, Bobbie Joe and Margie Kim, and their respective spouses; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; former wives Amalia Martinez Ortega and Margaret Munoz Ortega; a daughter, Mary O. Martinez; five brothers; and one sister.
The rosary will be recited Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. with Father Bryant Hausfeld, O.F.M., as celebrant.
Interment will follow in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery with military honors by the Holloman Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Frank, Armando, Joe and Ray Ortega, Peter Madrid Jr. and Javier Aguirre. Honorary pallbearers will be Fernando "Chino" Malone, David Munoz, Daniel and Eric Benitez, Robert Sanchez and Eduardo Contreras.
Friends may call Thursday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
