Retired Air Force chief master sergeant
Joseph K. Batten, a longtime resident of El Paso, Texas, died April 20, 2008, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Batten was born July 8, 1930, in Charlottesville, Va., to James M. Edwards and Mazie B. Edwards and was an only child. He served in the Air Force for 30 years, retiring as chief master sergeant. He served two tours at Holloman Air Force Base on the Mace missile projects and later on rocket sled propulsion tests.
After retirement from the Air Force, he worked at the Western Refinery in El Paso for 18 years, and was better known to his co-workers as Col. Batten. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and he will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Survivors include his wife, Delores S. Batten; a son, Terrell J. Batten and wife Lynda, of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Dianne C. Sealander and Dwayne Nowell, of Alamogordo, and Karen J. Hunter and her husband David, of Alamogordo; step-daughters Dawn M. Anderson, and Christina M. Colvin, of Spokane, Wash.; and stepson, Doran Kuder; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Cellurale, of Lemont Furnace, Pa., and Jeremy Paz, of Alamogordo; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hillcrest Funeral Home-Doniphan, 5054 Doniphan in El Paso, Texas. Friends may visit Thursday, April 24, 2008, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2008, at the Hillcrest Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery immediately following, with military honors provided by the Holloman Air Force Honor Guard.
The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to your favorite charity.
