Joyce Mitchell Obituary
Joyce Mitchell passed away quickly and peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009.
Joyce was born April 30, 1922, in London, England, to Alice and William Maynard. Joyce began her work career as a sales girl at Harrods of London. In 1941 Joyce joined the Signal Corp of the British Army and acted as a cryptographer during World War II. Joyce's military assignments included tours in Egypt, Israel and Germany, where she met and married Charles Fredrick Mitchell, "Mitch." Joyce was naturalized as an American citizen in 1951. Joyce enjoyed her working career holding assignments at White Sands Missile Range, Holloman Air Force Base, Kwajalein Marshall Islands and the city of Alamogordo. Joyce loved her time spent with family, friends and her volunteer work with the Alamogordo Public Library and the New Mexico Commission for the Blind. Joyce moved from Alamogordo to Arizona in 2005 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
Joyce is survived by her children Vikki Mitchell McCloud, of Prescott, Ariz., Lester Mitchell of Frisco, Texas, and Bill Mitchell of Tempe, Ariz., along with numerous grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and her brother, Bill Maynard, of Kent, England.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church, 901 W. Erie St., Chandler, Ariz.
