1937 - 2009 Obituary Condolences
Joyce Virginia Nowell, 71, of Oklahoma City, Okla., died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, of congestive heart failure at her home in Oklahoma City.
She was born on July 2, 1937, in Nashville, Ga., the daughter of Hughie Arnold Singletary and Maggie (Ray) Singletary.
Joyce had three siblings, Emory Singletary, David Singletary and Darlene (Singletary) Caldwell. Joyce was a 1956 graduate of Reidland High School in Paducah, Ky. She joined the Air Force in the summer of 1956 and was trained as a nurse assistant.
Joyce married Celolan Roy Nowell, of Soper, Okla., on July 11, 1957, in Seguin, Texas. She was honorably discharged from service in September 1957. Together with Roy, she raised four children.
She volunteered as a school librarian, coached a Little League baseball team and achieved a credential as a substitute teacher. She enjoyed rock hunting, painting, sewing and crochet.
With her children grown, she began a career in Civil Service at the Farmers Home Administration. Upon moving to Alamogordo in 1979, she resumed her work with the U.S. Army at White Sands Missile Range, which ended with her retirement from the Army Materiel Command Acquisition Center, White Sands Missile Range Branch, in March of 1998, as a procurement technician. She moved to Oklahoma City in spring 2002 to be closer to her grandchildren. She devoted herself to genealogy research and compiled an impressive body of information.
She is survived by three sons, one daughter and two daughters-in-law, Brian and Maria Nowell, of Oklahoma City, Michael Alan and Gwen Nowell, of Plant City, Fla., Laurel Ann Nowell, of Phoenix, Ariz., and John Hugh Nowell, of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Celolan Roy Nowell, in August 1998; and one brother, Emory Singletary, in 1981.
A viewing will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2009, at Alamogordo Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Alamogordo Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joe A. Wolff officiating.
Joyce will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband in Monte Vista Cemetery following the service Tuesday, with military honors provided by Holloman Air Force Base Steel Talons Honor Guard.
The family has entrusted entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements.
