Juan J. "Jay" Torrez Obituary
Juan Jose (Jay) Torrez, 84, passed away Friday, July 22, 2011, in Alamogordo after a lengthy illness with cancer. He was born March 10, 1927, in Bingham to George and Celia (Sanchez) Torrez. He was the youngest of a family of nine.
He lost both his parents by the age of 16 so he went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad laying tracks and doing other heavy work more suitable for a grown man. In 1944 he married his childhood sweetheart, Edna Phillips, in Carrizozo.
He served in the U.S. Army for a short time during World War II. He worked in construction for several years, which took him and his family throughout the state of New Mexico. Then he worked at Holloman for several years until 1968 when Jay and the family moved to Jarales. While there he had a farm that he enjoyed very much and also worked at Kirtland Air Force Base. After several years they moved back to the La Luz and the Alamogordo area. Jay made many friends during his lifetime, was always ready to help and was generous to a fault. He will be missed by so many.
Survivors include Celia (Jimmy) Contreras, of Davenport, Iowa; Prestinia (Arthur) Chavez, of Alamogordo; Geri (Frank) Cano, of Alamogordo; Orlando Torrez, of La Luz; Benny (Maria) Torrez, of Roswell; and Johnny (Mary Ann) Torrez, of Las Cruces. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Jay was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Edna; his parents George and Celia Torrez; a daughter, Bertha; four brothers; four sisters and one great-grandchild, Lorenzo.
The viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2011, followed by the rosary, which will be recited by Rosemary Cordova and Lydia Contreras at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of the Light Church in La Luz.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Friday, July 29, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Light Church in La Luz with Father Bruce Hausfelt, O.F.M., as celebrant.
Pallbearers include his grandsons, Mark Contreras, David Chavez, John Cano, Kevin Torrez, Michael Torrez and Andrew Kiskaden.
Interment will follow at the La Luz Cemetery.
The family will greet friends after the funeral at a reception at the La Luz Gymnasium. Should friends desire, contributions may be made to the Cancer Society or Alamogordo Home Care and Hospice.
The Torrez family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
