Juanita (Nita) Root Obituary
Juanita (Nita) Root was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Mesquite, Nev., and died June 11, 2013, in Alamogordo. She was the daughter of the late Robert Barnum and Ida Leavitt Barnum, of Las Vegas, Nev.
Nita married Donald Root during World War II and spent the next 26 years as a military wife at 10 bases in the United States and for three overseas tours. Nita owned and operated a motel and restaurant in Bossier City, La., and co-owned and managed the Western Palace restaurant in Alamogordo. She finished her working career as an office manager of the Root, Reynolds and Oakley tax firm.
Nita was an active volunteer in Kiwanis, International, serving as secretary and president of the Alamogordo Kiwanis Club and Lt. Governor of two Divisions of the Southwest District of Kiwanis.
Nita also enjoyed 20 years of participation in the activities of the Don Root Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America as an auxiliary member. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Daniel Barnum and sister-in-law Clarice Barnum.
To cherish her memory, she leaves her husband, Don, son Glenn, grandson Jeffrey and wife, Justina, grandson Robert, sister Loma and husband, Walt Arnold, brother Ernest, great-grandson Oren, 12 nephews and 13 nieces.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, 2013, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel.
