Judy Ann Shinabery Obituary

Judy Ann (Owen) Shinabery left for her heavenly home on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, after an eight-year battle with mesothelioma. Her family, and friends, were at her bedside during the 27-hour vigil at the end of her life.

Judy was born on Dec. 20, 1958, in San Antonio, Texas, to Lynn and Shirley (Downs) Owen. She graduated from Central High School in San Angelo, in 1976, and in 1980 she earned a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology. In 1984 she married Michael Shinabery, and the couple moved to Los Angeles. There she worked at the world-famous facility for schizophrenia, the Anne Sippi Clinic. Her first child, Christopher, was born in 1992, and wanting to raise him in a smaller community, the family moved to Cloudcroft. Judy soon went to work at the Counseling Center. In 1995 her daughter, Shara, was born. Judy slowly downscaled work to spend more time at home.
Doctors diagnosed Judy with mesothelioma in 2006, and told her she had 14 months to live. Her greatest desire was to see Chris and Shara graduated from high school, and she fought her illness to see them receive their diplomas. Largely confined to home, and disabled, Judy cooked up untold pounds of pasta for the Rotary Club of Alamogordo, which provides food to the Juarez orphanage Casa de Libertad. She wrapped Christmas boxes for the Crossing Borders ministry that provides holiday gifts to children in Juarez.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, two of the most generous, giving people; and a brother, Melvin.

She is survived by her husband and children; a sister, Carolyn (John), and their children Jacqueline and James; a brother, Lynn Jr., (Sarah), and their children Caitlyn and Colin; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A celebration of Judy's life will take place on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 10 a.m., at First Baptist Church, 106 Burro Ave., in Cloudcroft. Private burial follows and family and friends are invited. Pallbearers are Chris Shinabery, Lynn Owen, Jr., Mike Lisk, Frank Mackewich, Doug Lee and Troy Chandler.

In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to donate to FGF International, which assists in providing food to Casa de Libertad. Send to: Full Gospel Businessman's Fellowship, P.O. Box 1804, Alamogordo, N.M. 88311.

There are not sufficient words to express the love and assistance from the family's many, many friends in this difficult time, as well as through the eight years Judy fought her illness. They are all honorary pallbearers. While not a complete list, they include the members of their church family at First Baptist, Pastor Larry and Cynthia Evans; the Church's Worship Team (Scott and Lynn Kimball, Warren and Deni Turner, Jim and Beverly Folan, and John and Judy Dalton); Corina Lisk, Lynn Skinner, Jan Lee, Abby Bryan, George and Connie Collins, John Mikul, Shauna Benshoof, Alex Seymour, The Cloudcroft Lions Club, Pat Gaskill, Glenda Daniels, Tresa Van Winkle, Maria Tieman, Dona Rieger, Dee Swope, Julie Ryan, Bob and Carol Aberg, Liz Beasley, Chauntell King, Curt and Bonnie Lancaster, Ed and Olga Weise, Lorraine Mackewich, Brandi Tanner and Judy's incredibly caring doctor, Mary Martinez and her nurse, Ruth. There are so many more. Thank you all.

Judy had faith in God and put her hope for eternal life in Jesus Christ. She is already greatly missed, but not in pain, and at peace.

The Shinabery family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. To sign the online register book, please visit
