1947 - 2008 Obituary Condolences
Judy Burns, age 61, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces.
Judy was born Jan. 3, 1947, to Clyde E. and Dena Mae Newton in Ada, Okla. She was a long-time resident of Alamogordo, having moved from Ada with her parents and siblings in 1958. She married Speed Burns in 1965, and then relocated to Austin, Texas. Returning to Alamogordo in 1975, she spent many years working in the accounting and insurance industries.
Judy was known for her genuine smile and infectious laugh, which were unmistakable to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was extremely talented with arts and crafts, and thoroughly enjoyed traveling. Her greatest joy was spending time with her granddaughter. She was a very devoted and loving mom, grandma, and friend who will forever remain in our hearts.
Judy attended Eastern New Mexico University (Portales) in 1991, and continued her education at New Mexico State University (Alamogordo and Las Cruces). She earned an Associate of Arts in Pre-Business (1993), and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (1995). She was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Society, Golden Key National Honor Society, and a Gold Cord Graduate.
Judy is survived by her daughter and her husband, Denise and Dale Leonard of Henderson, Nev.; daughter Laura Burns, granddaughter Arianna Eves, along with Laura's fiancé Luis Ruiz, of Alamogordo; two sisters, Charlene Todd of Bossier City, La., and Deanna Brady-Thornton and her husband Jerry of Alamogordo; brother Thomas Newton of Fresnal Canyon; nieces Melissa Donald and her husband Michael of The Woodlands, Texas, Retta Bedenbaugh of Las Cruces, and Aleesha Newton of Alamogordo; and nephews Phillip Todd and his wife Farris of Shreveport, La., Mike Brady and his wife Shelly of Houston, Texas, Billy Newton of Anchorage, Alaska, Kevin Newton of Alamogordo, and Tran Newton of Alamogordo.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
A Celebration of Life is planned at 10:30 a.m for Saturday, Sept. 20, at Cuba Avenue Church of Christ, 1300 Cuba Avenue, Alamogordo. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
