Katheryn Lena Fambrough was born Jan. 11, 1918, in Loop, Texas to Philip and Nancy Preston.  She passed from this life on Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, after a long illness.
As a child, Katheryn lived in Texas, California and New Mexico. On July 25, 1933, Katheryn married Harvey Fambrough, a rancher from Ancho, N.M. They had four children: Preston, Harvey Ray, Lois and Janel.
She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Katheryn was a devoted Christian, and as long as her health permitted, she was a teacher and leader in church. Although unable to attend, she was a member of the Portales First Baptist Church.
Katheryn worked at Holloman Air Force Base in the 1950s and 60s, retiring in 1969. It was an exciting time in space history and she enjoyed sharing her interesting and unusual stories.
After many years in Artesia, Tularosa and Alamogordo, Harvey and Katheryn moved to Hagerman in 1979, and once again enjoyed the "country life."
Shortly after celebrating 65 years of marriage, Harvey passed away in September 1998.  Katheryn then moved to Portales to be near her daughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harvey; a son, Preston Lee; three brothers, Duane Beal, Andrew Beal and Jerry Fambrough; a grandson, Dale Wayne Herring; and a son-in-law, Jim Hill.
Katheryn is survived by three children, Harvey Ray, Lois Herring and her husband, Jim, of Artesia, and Janel Hill, of Portales; and a sister, Alexa Sue Hooser and her husband, Travis, of Alamogordo; seven grandchildren, Teresa Fields and her husband, John, of Louisa, Ky., Angela Robinson and her husband, Peter, of Woodinville, Wash., Sam Fambrough, Carol Berry and her husband, Allen, of Alamogordo, Jimmy Herring and his wife, Pam, of Artesia, John W. Hill and his wife, Susie, of Nashville, Tenn., and Debra Hill Santos and her husband, Ben, of Guntersville, Ala.; nine great-grandchildren; a special almost-son, Cubia "Pill" Clayton, of Tularosa; and countless friends and relatives.
Arrangements by Wheeler Mortuary.
