Kathryn S. Daniel Obituary
Kathryn S. Daniel, 83, passed away Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at Mesilla Valley Hospice, La Posada. Kathryn was born to John and Martha Finch Skelley on Feb. 1, 1926, in Boise City, Okla. In 1930, she moved to Cebolla with her parents and twin brothers. Her father was a rancher and cattle buyer, and her mother ran Skelley's Mercantile. She attended Loretto Academy in Santa Fe from first grade through high school. Upon graduation, she enrolled at New Mexico A & M (New Mexico State University) where she became a proud member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.
After graduating with a degree in home economics education, she taught at Court Junior High in Las Cruces for two years. She and Quinton Daniel married on Oct. 3, 1947, and moved to Alamogordo in 1950 when Quinton accepted a position at Holloman Air Force Base as an engineer for Land-Air. In 1956, they opened Daniel Engineering Company and operated it until their retirement in 1989. Kathryn and Quinton were also involved in several businesses, including the founding of banks in both Alamogordo and Las Cruces. They worked side by side successfully throughout their 54 years of marriage. When asked how they could be together for 24 hours a day, year after year, she would say it was because they not only loved each other, but they also truly liked and respected one another and were best friends. Quinton's death in 2002 was, in her words, "a horrendous loss," but her ever-positive outlook and many business interests kept her busy and gave her a sense of accomplishment and pride.
Kathryn, a highly respected, astute businesswoman and civic-minded person, was a lifelong supporter of the arts and member of the Democratic Party. In 2004, the Alamogordo Women's History Committee recognized her as an honoree during the "Spirit of the Women" presentation. She was an inspiration and role model to her family and a large number of friends. Always interested in every phase of life, Kathryn was an encouraging and loving wife and mother and a devoted friend to countless people. Because of her compassion, integrity and generosity, she inspired and enriched the lives of all who knew her.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, her brother Kenneth Skelley and a great-granddaughter, Chloe Webb. Kathryn is survived by son John Daniel and wife, Patsy; son Jim Daniel and wife, Peggy; a daughter, Mary Daniel Montoya and husband, Narciso (Junior); six grandchildren, Sara, Dana, Nathan and Evan Daniel, and Amanda and Daniel Montoya; and a great-grandchild, Janae Webb. Other survivors include her brother Keith Skelley and many nieces and nephews.
At Kathryn's request, cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held. However, her family will host a reception in her honor between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at her home in Alamogordo. At a later date, her cremains will be interred next to her husband in Roswell.
Many thanks to the La Posada staff for their kindness and compassionate care and to the many friends and family who made a special effort in the last weeks of Kathryn's life to let her know how much she meant to them.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana, Las Cruces, NM 88005, or to the Quinton E. Daniel Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund at NMSU in care of Western Bank, P.O. Box 5100, Alamogordo, NM 88311-5100.
